You came home from vacation, or skipped service for two weeks in July, and your pool is now green. The instinct is to buy a bag of pool shock at the hardware store, dump it in, and hope for the best. After 11 years as a pool technician, I can tell you: that approach usually makes things worse, and almost always costs more in the long run.
Here's what's actually happening in a green pool. Algae is a living organism. When your chlorine drops below 1 ppm — which in Arizona summer heat can happen in 48–72 hours without service — algae spores that are always present in pool water begin to bloom rapidly. In Arizona's heat, a pool can go from clear to visibly green in 10–14 days. Once you can't see the bottom, you're in full algae bloom territory.
What not to do: Don't just add chlorine tabs or pucks. Slow-dissolving chlorine pucks are maintenance products, not recovery products. They cannot produce the rapid, concentrated chlorine spike needed to kill an active algae bloom. Don't add clarifier either — clarifier works by clumping small particles, but with heavy algae it can actually create a chemistry interaction that makes the water murkier before it gets better, and it doesn't address the underlying biology.
What actually works — and why it's a multi-day process. Green pool recovery requires a sequence: first, a heavy shock treatment (typically 3–5x the normal shock dose based on pool size) to begin killing the algae. This needs to run overnight with the pump running continuously. Second, algaecide application the following morning to address any algae the shock didn't reach. Third — and this is where DIY attempts most often fail — vacuum to waste. This means bypassing your filter entirely and vacuuming the dead algae out of the pool directly to drain. If you vacuum to filter, you're circulating dead algae back into the water.
Day 3 typically involves a secondary shock treatment if the water isn't clear yet, and a deep filter backwash or media cleaning. By day 4–5, most pools are ready for a final chemistry balance. The total chemistry adjustment — pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid — has to be completed after the water is clear, because a green pool's chemistry is completely unreliable for measuring anything accurately.
When to call a professional. If you can't see the bottom of the pool, if the water is dark green or black (indicating severe bloom with potentially dangerous bacteria levels), or if you've already tried shock treatment once and the water didn't improve — call a pro. In severe cases, attempting DIY recovery can actually make the problem worse by creating chemistry conditions that interfere with chlorine efficacy. The additional cost of a professional recovery is almost always less than the cost of the extra chemicals and time spent on failed DIY attempts.
One more thing: once your pool is recovered, figure out why it went green. Was it a missed service? Did your pump fail? Are your cyanuric acid levels too high, which blocks chlorine efficacy even when levels look adequate on a test strip? The recovery treats the symptom. Understanding the cause prevents the next one.
